Hey everyone! As we have officially settled in Canada after our move from France, we're starting to really understand the cost of living and what is more or less affordable in Canada vs France. It's really opened our eyes to things we never knew were "cheap" cough cough internet access in France, and this video talks about the 6 things I was so surprised about that are wayyyy more expensive in Canada than in France!
Enjoy!
Bisous! Kate ✌

I understand your point on knowing a foreign language. I am trying to learn a few. I can tell you this, one can study a language: from books, internet, Uni, songs/movies, etc., but it doesn't replace talking to someone in that language. A learner needs that one-on-one conversation. If each US state/region had a different language like Europe, yes, we would have more bilingual people. And there's the money issue. Not everyone can afford to travel, let alone move to another country & live there.

Oh yeah ! Super saccharine Americans really blow the French away. They are amazed and, I guess, they might think it is some sort of scam. It is hard to get ‘inside’ a French household in any case. You have to ‘woo’ them. The French are not actually rude to Americans in particular, they just don’t suffer fools gladly. It is nothing personal. The French are more ‘observers’ (…think French street-side cafes) than go-getters. ‘Sales’ people are met with suspicion. So…. Did you manage to renounce your U.S. citizenship or are you still paying taxes on worldwide income??? Is this about stereotypes or is it a U.S. sales call??? This is exactly the kind of up-market practice that rubs the French the wrong way. Americans eat huge portions. The French - - especially the young, are eating some really fatal junk food but they tend to eat it in smaller portions than Americans. Sometimes when I see them putting it away, I’m surprised that they don’t get sick (…the French have delicate livers). The French are actually less promiscuous (…on average) than Americans. If you want to bed a woman in France, find a lonely American…. Or get a dog. I can’t recall ever having bedded a French girl (…for the first time) - - in France. Lots of women of other nationalities (…Paris in particular is the world’s seat of romance). Better to find French women when they are on vacation in another country - - and can spare the time to be seduced. (The French waste nothing.) I think for the Anglo boy, everything in French seems slightly illicit. French women have a ‘je ne sais quoi’ about them. It’s not that I haven’t thought about it a million times but - - what can I say? They are French - - vive la difference. I guess it started with Bridget Bardot, for me - - I’m not really sure. But I only want to be with the French-born woman. An American with a French passport seems like cheating, somehow, anyway. You can take the American out of America but you can never really not be American. I realized a long time ago that I would never be French no matter how much of an insider I became. All that being said, I only sleep with French women [shrug]. (And, sorry, _not_ American women with French passports.) …Once you go French, you’ll never go back to the wench.

Some excellent, practical, common sense advice about making friends almost anywhere, but with some useful insights into France-specific relationship culture. Also good, relevant comments in that section -and I, too, loved the "chicken dinner" reference. That said, I trust that the presenter's actual spoken French pronunciation is better than the one she uses in the video. Bonne continuation à tous.

the French do couple up right away and move in together. the French actually find it strange if you are single. However, keep in mind that they break up fast too. Just because you live together does not mean the frenchie is considering you for long term. and their "honesty' at break up time can be brutal.

Ne t'inquiètes pas . Les accents servent à parler la langue originel où nous sommes nés . Même dans les différentes régions françaises où l'ancien patois n'est plus parler . Ex l'accent anglais ou l'accent italien ou allemand n'est pas le même accent . 👅👍❤️

So to you, being French means being under the government of France. Nope. Being a citizen of France does not make you truly French. My ancestors left France for the New World five hundred years ago (1612). I am French in ancestry and physically while being American of nationality. You could live in a stable, but that wouldn't make you a horse.

All can get fat, and anybody get some fat, but most people around the planet never get *that* extremely fat. *We all know that much more fat than muscle reduce life expectancy* , and *people generally want to live.* They want to breathe, and their doctors tell them how. And the depressed ones who don't want to live tend to stop eating, because it's just cheaper and it works well for them when they have lost even the will to go shopping. Yes, there's an element of Judeo-Christian shame, fat being mentally associated with the sin of gluttony, but there's also a huge element of *shared, genuine medical concerns.*

If those rules can be generalised, it's that the French attitude to food is a lot more formal than the English-speaking world. Americans are generally much more used to eating with their hands - a lot of American dishes are kind of designed that way, and most American dining (along with most American culture in general) is very informal (that's usually a good thing). You're given an knife and fork and you are expected to use them. Again, most Americans tend to eat with just a fork and only use their knife to cut up larger things. In formal French dining, throughout the course you always hold your fork in the left hand and the knife in the right and apart from cutting, you use the knife to push food on the fork. Also, the things on your plate are designed as a whole dish and designed to be eaten together, not in sequence. So you have a piece of each thing on your plate on your fork and in thus your mouth at the same time, rather than one thing after another. And take much smaller mouthfuls than typical Americans would. Taking big bites out of your food is a huge non-no! And last pointer, take your time eating! American restaurant culture is to get the diner fed and out ASAP so that the table can be used for another party. French restaurants expect that each table will be used by one , maybe a maximum of two parties, throughout the course of an evening sessions; American restaurants will expect three or maybe four. On and Americans, please do not call your main course an entrée - this makes no sense in French as it means starter.

I don't know where you lived in France but in most of Europe we have AC, TVs in every room and screens on our windows. The thing I don't understand is why americans insist on keeping those slide windows. Our windows can be opened two ways, even in the bathroom, have more insulation because we have multiple sheets of glass with air between them. Also it is very difficult to break this tipe of window. We don't use so much AC because our homes are insulated since construction and you can add even more. I only use the AC when is really hot, 40+. Below that or when is cold my house design takes care of me. Finally, way too many cars but that's understandable, you've ruined your public transportation for individual vehicles.

I hope your health is good. Well. I immigrated to Montréal and loved living there, although I later immigrated to Switzerland, where I am now, which I also love. Suggestions: Montréal is a city of festivals. Practically every week. Go. My favourite boulangerie is Mamie Clafoutis on Ave van Horne in Outremont. Première Moisson is also nice. My favourite cheese shop is Yannick Frommagerie 1218, rue Bernard. I lived in Outremont and Mile Ex. There are too many great restaurants to recommend. Try them all. What neighbourhood are our living in? EDIT: Eat Québecois cheese. Every week I went to Yannick and simply asked to try something new. You won't be disappointed. Canada also makes some great wines. Drink local.
